FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE SYDNEY ROBOTICS ACADEMY?

Sydney Robotics Academy is a unique, innovative and highly effective educational institution. Through fostering logical thinking abilities, focusing on the application of knowledge and participating in national and international competitions, Sydney Robotics Academy aims to develop all-round students of the 21st century who are highly motivated, forward-looking and future-ready.

WHAT IS STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. These areas of study share similarities in both theory and practice. STEM education enables students to develop cognitive abilities which will aid them in the quality and speed of their problem solving skills. Most importantly, it helps us to solve the challenges the world faces today.

WHAT IS ROBOTICS?

Robotics is a powerful platform that can engage the children of today. Students must have basic knowledge and comprehension of how sensors, motors and other components can be coded to function together to solve a problem. It encompasses elements of Applied Physics; Mathematics; Computer Programming; Digital Prototyping and Design. It also involves critical thinking and problem solving abilities, and teamwork and leadership skills.

WHAT IS CODING?

Coding empowers today's digital world. It allows us to create computer software, games, apps and websites. These can be done because coding is a list of instructions that enable computers to abide by it and do what you want. When children learn to code, it helps them develop fundamental skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and logic. These skill sets make it possible for children to learn that there can be various ways to solve a problem, and that a simpler and more efficient solution is often better.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF LEARNING VEX ROBOTICS?

VEX Robotics stimulate creativity, teamwork, leadership, passion and problem-solving among groups. By familiarising students with programming, sensors, and automation, students hone critical computational thinking skills needed to succeed in both the workforce and in everyday life. Through the use of educational robotics, students are more motivated to engage in the classroom and make most of their strengths, in order for them to meet their learning needs.

DO STUDENTS REQUIRE EXPERIENCE OR EXPOSURE TO ROBOTICS OR CODING?

  • It is not essential for children to have prior knowledge or experience of robotics or coding.

IS THERE A MINIMUM OR MAXIMUM AGE FOR ENTRY TO YOUR COURSES?

  • The minimum age group are NSW Kindergarten students

  • The maximum age group are NSW Year 12 students

WHEN DO I NEED TO APPLY?

  • You can enrol lessons at www.sydneyrobotics.com.au/enrol

  • We recommend enrolling early to ensure you receive a spot I.e. you will need to register in the middle of term 3 to join term 4 lessons.

  • N.B. Our academy terms follow the NSW School term dates.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS PROGRESSING AT THE EXPECTED RATE?

  • Reports are sent to parents at the end of each term.

  • For most lessons, photos of the student's coding project or robotics project will be made available every few weeks.

  • The parents of the competition team will receive frequent feedback on their progress.

WHAT IF WE'RE INTERESTED IN JOINING THE COMPETITIONS? WHAT WILL THEY HAVE TO DO?
